"If mama ain't happy, nobody happy."
Gazi to Kyle Crane.

Gazi is a character featured in Dying Light.

Description[]

He is a developmentally disabled man living in the southwest area of the Slums, in a small shanty village under an overpass. He had previously lived with his mother, though she passed away two years prior to the outbreak. However, he still pretends she is alive through an effigy of her in his living room, and prior to the outbreak, had even continued to collect her medical prescription from the local pharmacy following her death. Gazi is also oblivious to the crisis going on, as he assumes that the infected are just dumb people who are mad that he is smarter than them.[1]

Biography[]

Events of Dying Light

Following the main story quest First Assignment, a group of runners led by Harris Brecken are ambushed by Kadir "Rais" Suleiman's thugs. The runners are killed and Brecken is badly injured, receiving a head wound that later causes him to have seizures. Kyle Crane is approached by Doctor Lena in the Tower to pay a visit to Gazi in an attempt to retrieve his mother's anti-seizure medicine. However, when Crane meets with Gazi, he refuses to assist him on account of it being his 'special day' with his mother. Initiating the Mother's Day quest, he tells Crane to retrieve a box of chocolates as well as the film Charly from a nearby Bluebox Video store. Once this is complete, Crane will have to break into Gazi's house via a hatch on the roof accessed by climbing the overpass in order to take the stash of medicine.

Show: Mother's Day

Gazi: "If Mama ain't happy, nobody happy! So you'd better make Mama happy!"
Crane: "Gazi?"
Gazi: "Me too. We have the same name. Are you from the video store?"
Crane: "No, my name's Crane."
Gazi: "Crane? Crane rhymes with train, and brain, and sane, and grain, and rain, and plain and the other kind of plane, and-"
Crane: "Can I come in?"
Gazi: "No! It's impossible! Impossible! This is my special day with Mom. It's Mother's Day, and it's the most important day in the whole world. Are you from the video store?"
Crane: "Why do you keep asking me that?"
Gazi: "Because you're supposed to bring my movie about me. It's called "Charly", and it's all about me, and how smart I am."
Crane: "Look, Gazi, if I bring you your movie, will you let me come in?"
Gazi: "Sure. You could watch with us. It's Mother's Day, and if Mama ain't happy, nobody happy. Oh! And she also wants chocolate! Mama wants chocolate!"
Crane: "Wait a minute. That's too much."
Gazi: "Don't argue with Gazi. It doesn't work. That's what the drug store people say."

After obtaining the movie and chocolate:

Gazi: "Yes?"
Crane: "Here's your movie and your chocolates."
Gazi: "Wait 'till mom see this! Gazi wins again! Hurray for Gazi!"
(Gazi slams the door in front of Crane)
Crane: "Right. Okay then, I'll just let myself in through the roof."

After entering Gazi's home:

Crane: "Hello, Gazi."
Gazi: "Shhh! The movie is on. Mama's watching."
Crane: "Is mama happy?"
Gazi: "Mama's real happy. Gazi got her chocolates and a movie."
Crane: "Then I'm going to take some medicine to help my friend."
Gazi: "Well... okay. Mama stopped getting seizures when her head turned into a pumpkin. They're on the table."
Crane: "Thanks, Gazi."
Gazi: "Gazi makes everybody happy."

Trivia[]

  • The film Gazi desires is likely based on the actual 1968 American science fiction drama film Charly, directed by Ralph Nelson, about a developmentally disabled man who greatly desires to increase his own intelligence.
  • Gazi is likely based on the character of Charlie Gordon in Daniel Keyes' 1959 short story Flowers for Algernon, later developed into a novel and the film Charly.
