"I decided to help Ezgi and cleared the tunnel – it was a goddamn Volatile hive. Unfortunately, Dara got infected on the way to the campsite... And because she wasn't a believer, she wasn't immune to the virus. She turned and attacked Ezgi. I got there in time... And even though she was traumatized, Ezgi decided to pursue her dream. She's on her way to Harran. The only thing I could do was to ask Lena to help her out if she manages to get there." Quest introduction

Exercises in futility is a side quest available in Dying Light: The Following.[1]
Objectives[]
- Go back to the tunnel and help Ezgi
- Talk to Ezgi
- Tell Jasir that Ezgi's gone
Walkthrough[]
After having helped Ezgi and Dara get a safe way to enter Harran, a disturbed Ezgi will call out to Crane over the radio. Head back to the now-cleared Volatile nest in the northeast of the map and see what is going on.
Inside the tunnel it becomes clear that Dara has turned into a Viral. Kill her and speak to Ezgi, who is hiding in a truck. She is determined to go to Harran, so Crane lets her. He will then contact Lena on the way to inform Jasir. After speaking to Jasir, the quest is completed.
Some time after completion of the quest, Ezgi will contact Crane to inform him that she has safely reached Troy. Crane will, in return, relay said information to Jasir.

Trivia[]
If the player returns to the volatile hive that was previously cleared for Ezgi in "The ties that bind", after completing the quest line and speaking to Ezgi via walkie-talkie; there will be a letter pinned to the door at the end of the tunnel. Addressed for Kyle, it reads:
"Kyle,
I've dreamed of this day for years. Now that I really stand before this choice of pushing on or going back, I have to tell you it's a little anti-climactic. It's just a matter of taking a step forward, and following it with another step in the same direction. I don't know why I was afraid of doing this earlier, before the outbreak. It would've been easier, it would've been just.... packing my stuff and getting out of there. And it seemed like a dream I couldn't possibly attain on my own. Now, it turns out, the difference is that I have to watch my steps so that I don't trip on the bodies. Thank you for helping me reach this place - I'm on my own now, and I've never felt this good before. Before the outbreak, it all was an automated chain of events, one leading to another, never changing and never diverting from its flow. After the outbreak... The inactivity, the passivity, it's like a virus. I felt it infecting me, infecting every part of my body and making me numb...turning me into a ghost. Wherever I was, I was surrounded by walking human corpses. I would've gone crazy. But wherever this path leads, now it's my path to walk. Goodbye and thank you, Ezgi"Letter from Ezgi
