Dead Island is a first person action role-playing survival horror video game developed by Techland and published by Deep Silver for Microsoft Windows, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Linux, and OS X. The game is centred on surviving an zombie-infested open world with a major emphasis on melee combat, and the plot tells about four survivors trying to survive on the island of Banoi until they are able to escape the island. Originally announced at E3 2006, the game was released on September 2011 and October 11 (in Japan).

Made prior to Dying Light, many of Dying Light's gameplay aspects are similar to Dead Island's, some have considered Dying Light as a "spiritual successor" to the Dead Island franchise, even though no actual connection has been made by Techland between the two series. Initally there were rumours that Dying Light was a sequel to Dead Island, but this has been denied and proven false as Techland members confirmed that it was an original title ever since its development.
