Dying Light Wiki

The Barrel SMG is a firearm in Dying Light introduced initially in The Following, the most recent update for Dying Light makes it a feature in the base game although at higher levels. It can be purchased from shops, found in loot caches and rarely (alongside its ammunition), in the trunks of police sedans and vans.

One can be found inside the military crates once unlocked.

Overview

Originally an exclusive in The Following expansion pack (and currently available albeit at extremely high levels/heavy progression into the game), it is initially a rare find and can be more likely found and sold in shops. While being in the Countryside, one of the locations for the Barrel SMG can be found in military crates once it has been unlocked. Otherwise in the Slums and Old Town, this can be bought from stores/traders for approximately near $10,000.

Compared to the Flea SMG, it has a higher rate of fire while it contains lower firepower. Both however, contain the same amount of accuracy (and both also have fairly good hipfire accuracy). The Barrel SMG also contains a lower value when being sold at shops. The weapon functions in full-automatic, but can be used for semi-automatic purposes too if tap-firing the weapon.

Overall, it is a firearm that bridges the gap between the lower powered/less lethal pistols and the more powerful and deadly rifles, whilst the shotguns (including variations) are in a class of their own. Due to it having a high-ROF/Rate-of-Fire, it is easy for less aware players to accidentally fire several bullets more than expected/needed and draw the unwanted attention of Virals as is the case with the Military Rifle (which is also fully-automatic).

Trivia

  • The Barrel SMG appears to be a hybrid of two real-world SMGs, resembling a combination of the Intratec TEC-9 and a M3 "Grease Gun". Although the magazine design and its overall handling makes this weapon slightly comparable to the Czech Skorpion VZ 61.
  • It is one of the firearms never used by the Bandits or Rais's gang members - The Bandits, Rais's gang members and any other hostile survivors seem to only prefer the Police Rifle and Military Rifle regarding firearms and are never seen making use of other firearms such as the Double-Barreled Shotgun and German/American pistols.
    • As a result, ammunition from this cannot be obtained by looting the corpses of Bandits or gang members.
